Who We Are
International Council for
The International Council for Nonprofit Management (ICNPM) was established in Dallas, Texas in 2005. The founding principal in the firm is Bekay Ahn, Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE). Bekay grew up in Korea and went on to study at US universities. He is the first Korean American to earn the designation of CFRE and has more than 20 years of fundraising experience. He has served as a speaker at the AFP International Conference and local meetings. In addition, he is widely recognized within the Korean American community in the US.
In 2007, Bekay was asked to provide fundraising education to United Way in Korea. This consulting assignment showed Bekay the many opportunities that existed to help nonprofits in his native country. So after spending 30 years in the US, Bekay moved back to Korea, incorporated his firm in Korea and has become the top recognized leader for Korean nonprofits.
While ICNPM provides many areas of fundraising consulting services, the main emphasis throughout the past five years has been educating individuals regarding philanthropy and fundraising. Fund development, or fundraising as it is known in Korea, is relatively new. Most of the programs have been started in the past five years and very few programs have more than ten years of history. So education has been and continues to be needed.
Since returning to Korea, Bekay has trained over 3,000 people in his fundraising classes and seminars. These people represent universities, health care systems, social service organizations, religious organizations as well as individuals who have an interest in knowing more about philanthropy and fundraising. Of these people, approximately 150 have made the decision to make fundraising their profession, many of whom are presently working in a nonprofit organization.
In the latter part of 2012, Bekay was introduced to Steve West by a mutual friend who knew Steve had an interest in moving to Korea. After several months of working through details, Steve joined ICNPM in February 2013 as a Principal and Senior Fundraising Consultant. Steve has more than 35 years of fundraising experience, including working in Jamaica and Saipan. He has worked in higher education, healthcare and for the past 11 years has consulted with nonprofits and businesses. In addition, he is a Fellow (FAHP) in the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy and was Chair of the association in 1991. His AHP ties are strong and because of that we are working with the association to promote its membership, programs and services to fundraisers in Korean medical centers.
Steve has had an interest in donor management software for the past 30 years. That interest began when he was the designer behind DonorBase 4. During this development he offered his perspective to the software engineers, served as the beta tester before it was offered to the market and helped with later revisions.
Steve’s joining ICNPM has provided new opportunities. The main one is how ICNPM can continue to diversify what it has to offer to become the one-stop resource for nonprofits in Korea. We recognize many nonprofits have a need for donor management software. At present these organizations are primarily using Excel or Access to track their information. Some organizations are using SmartRaiser which was developed by a Korean firm within the past few years. From what we understand, many of the firms using SmartRaiser are not pleased with it.
